Privacy policy

Version mtfs-laborhood-2026-10-03-membership · October 3, 2026

TheLaborhood is operated by Making Things For Smiles, LLC (MTFS). This policy covers the Android app, our website, account and payment services, and support. Contact mark@makingthingsforsmiles.com with privacy questions or requests.

Information we handle

  • Account information: email address, profile name and business details, sign-in provider identifiers, session records, and Terms acceptance.
  • Information you contribute: posts, comments, private messages, claims, completion evidence, photos, reports, blocks, and support requests.
  • Location and activity: areas you select, check-ins, map requests, notification preferences and read state, and security and operational records. You control Android location permission; map tile requests can reveal the area being viewed to the map provider.
  • Payments: funding amounts, fees, transaction and payout status, and Stripe Customer and connected-account identifiers. Stripe collects payment-method, bank and identity information through its own payment and onboarding pages. Do not send card numbers, bank credentials, or identity documents in chat or support email.
  • Device and connection information: notification registration identifiers, app/session bindings, IP addresses, and request or error metadata processed by our hosting and service providers.

City and project-location sharing. City sharing is optional. When you turn it on, TheLaborhood stores the country, region, and locality you choose or confirm and shows that city to members using the network. Android may use location permission and its geocoding service to resolve a city from your device location; that service may process location data. The app sends the resulting city fields to TheLaborhood, not your device’s GPS coordinates. A project pin is separate: if you place one, TheLaborhood stores its exact map point and label and shows it only to accepted friends or the friends you select. A pin expires within eight hours, and changing your shared city clears it. Someone who can view a pin may record its details while it is visible.

Contact details and contact discovery. Your sign-in email is not shown to other members by default. If you choose to display an email address or website, authenticated members can see it according to that setting. Your phone number is shown only to an accepted friend when you also enable phone sharing. You separately control whether a verified email address or phone number can be used to find your account. If you choose contact discovery, email addresses and phone numbers from your device contacts are sent to TheLaborhood for matching; if you connect Google, the app reads contact names, email addresses, and phone numbers for matching. TheLaborhood uses keyed hashes for its discoverable matching index and does not store an imported address book as a raw contact list. Finding members and saving eligible friends are separate choices.

WorkSignals AI interviews send the messages you submit to OpenAI to ask follow-up questions and prepare a draft for your review. Selected photos and PDFs are sent only when you separately consent for that request. Interview messages and unpublished drafts are restricted to your account through TheLaborhood's API. Unpublished uploads are restricted to your account; when you publish a WorkSignal with attachments, signed-in users who can view that WorkSignal can access those attachments. Inactive interviews are scheduled for deletion after 30 days, and you can delete an interview sooner. Deleting an interview does not automatically delete separately uploaded or published attachments. OpenAI does not use API data to train models unless the account opts in. Requests use `store:false`, which disables Responses application-state storage but is not a zero-retention guarantee: OpenAI's default abuse-monitoring logs may retain content for up to 30 days, subject to exceptions and applicable account data controls.

How and why we use information

We use information to authenticate accounts, show nearby work, connect customers and workers, deliver messages and alerts, process payments, review evidence and disputes, prevent abuse, maintain the service, and respond to support requests. Public posts and profile information are visible to other members. Private messages and evidence are restricted by the app’s access controls, but are not end-to-end encrypted; authorized support and safety staff may access information needed to investigate an issue.

Service providers and disclosure

We use Replit for hosting, Supabase/PostgreSQL for database storage, Cloudflare for website and media delivery/storage, an SMTP email provider for account messages, Stripe for payments and identity/onboarding, Google and Facebook for optional sign-in, and Firebase Cloud Messaging for phone alerts. Map tile providers receive requests for the areas you view. These providers process information needed for their services, including network and security metadata. Stripe and sign-in providers also apply their own privacy policies.

Phone alert delivery uses an opaque device registration and a generic event envelope; private message text, names, addresses, and payment amounts are not included in that envelope. Opening an alert requires the app to check the current account’s access.

We may disclose information where necessary to comply with law, respond to a valid legal request, protect people or the service, or process a business transfer subject to appropriate privacy safeguards. We do not sell personal information or use Android advertising identifiers for targeted advertising.

If you connect Google for contact features, read access is used to find members, and broader write access is requested only if you choose to save eligible friends to Google Contacts. Disconnecting deletes TheLaborhood’s stored Google authorization and contact-sync state, cancels scheduled sync, and attempts to revoke the Google authorization. Disconnecting does not delete contacts already copied to Google Contacts; remove those copies in Google Contacts. Email and phone verification messages are sent only after you request verification. TheLaborhood does not read your SMS inbox. Email, Text, and Call actions open the corresponding device app for you to review and send or call; they do not send a message or place a call automatically.

Your choices

You can edit your profile, control notification categories in the app and Android settings, deny location or notification permission, report content, block members, and request account deletion. Denying phone alerts does not prevent checking updates inside the app. Signing out removes the device’s active account binding. Contact us to request access to or correction of information you cannot change yourself.

City sharing, project pins, contact discovery, contact-card display, phone sharing, and saving friends are optional and controlled separately in the app. You can stop city sharing, remove a pin, change contact-card settings, turn off contact discovery, disable friend saving, or disconnect Google. Removing a pin or changing a sharing setting prevents future access through TheLaborhood after the change takes effect; it cannot recall information another person already recorded or contacts already copied to a device or Google account. Account deletion remains available through the existing account controls and follows the deletion and retention terms above.

Deletion and retention

Use the in-app Delete account action or request deletion without the app. Deletion ends access, revokes sessions and phone-alert registrations, and removes or anonymizes profile information and ordinary account content. Media cleanup is retried if the storage provider is temporarily unavailable. Copies another person has independently saved cannot be recalled.

Account-level Stripe Customer and connected-account links are retained in a restricted closeout record for 180 days from account deletion for reconciliation, refunds, disputes, and fraud prevention. They are then purged from that local closeout record. This is separate from transaction-level financial records, which may remain for accounting, fraud prevention, disputes, and legal obligations. Deleting the app account does not guarantee deletion of records Stripe must retain. Pending financial obligations or required provider checks may need resolution before deletion can complete; the app explains the next step.

Operational logs, backups, and provider-held records follow the relevant service’s retention and recovery process rather than instant deletion from every copy. We restrict retained information to the purpose that requires it. Contact us for details about information retained for your account.

Security, age, and changes

We use encrypted network connections and access controls, but no service can guarantee absolute security. TheLaborhood is for adults who can enter service and payment agreements, not children. Contact us if you believe a child has supplied personal information. Information may be processed outside your state or country by our providers. We publish updates on this page and request renewed acceptance when required by the app’s Terms flow.
